We now live in a world, thanks to President Trump, where a porn star is now a folk hero. I could make a comparison to Monica Lewinsky who was demonized for decades. Now we’re kinda cool with porn stars being role models. Well at least West Hollywood is. The mayor called her a heroine and a symbol of the resistance, which works with a lot of the moves West Hollywood has made to stand up to Trump.

Decades before the Holocaust, Germany carried out what many historians consider the first genocide of the 20th century in Namibia. German generals targeted two land-owning ethnic groups, the Herero and Nama, killing 100,000 people; and throwing the survivors into concentration camps.

The killings shrunk the Herero and Nama from among the biggest groups in the country to two of the smallest. Partly as a result, the Herero and Nama are much poorer than Namibians of German descent.

Now, descendants of the survivors are suing Germany for an admittance of genocide, an apology, and reparations.

"We hope to get an apology from the Germans," Gottlieb Kazombiaze, an Herero activist told VICE News.

They also want to use the money to buy back their land. But they’re facing fierce resistance from the country’s white population. White Namibians comprise 6 percent of the country's population, but own 60 percent of its private land. They’re not happy with the prospect of giving up property that's been in their families for decades.

If the Herero and Nama win, the case could set a legal precedent and encourage other indigenous groups to sue former colonial powers.

In the film world, disliking Wim Wenders is tantamount to heresy. Or rather, disliking Wim Wenders's movies. Disliking the man himself is nigh impossible given how kindly, soft-spoken, and sharp-looking he is for a man his age.

Incidentally, these are the same qualities that have made loving such films as Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire a matter of inviolable cinematic orthodoxy.

His works are such pristinely shot, immaculately conceived meditations on the relationship between space and humanity they're like visual homilies. Long, slow visual homilies.

It would make great copy if this is what Pope Francis had in mind when he selected Wim to be his official papal documentarian for the past two years, but he didn't even pick him.

Instead, Wenders was invited to follow around the most important religious leader on earth by some guy in the Vatican who apparently likes his films enough to overlook the fact that he's currently a protestant and doesn't speak a lick of the pope's native Spanish.

Despite having abandoned Catholicism half a century ago, the documentary that Wenders wound up making is not a Michael Moore-style, nor even a more subtle Errol Morris-style takedown of the supreme pontiff. Wenders is plainly taken with Francis and his personal commitment to the ascetic lifestyle of his namesake.

And while he doesn’t squander his chance to press the new Pope on some of the church's more egregious failings, like sheltering child-molesting priests (though no mention of the papacy's continued condemnation of birth control and the countless lives it has damned to poverty), Pope Francis, A Man of His Word is about as glowing a halo-job of the titular wordsman as any unlapsed Catholic could’ve come up with. Just don't tell the guy at Film Forum that you found it a little slow.

DNA tests for newborns to check for diseases are already mandated across the U.S., but a new study at Boston's Brigham and Women's hospital called "BabySeq" is taking it a step further.

This landmark genetic scan screens newborns for around 1,800 diseases including breast cancer and genetic mutations that produce sudden cardiac death — which leads to another main component of the study: parents that choose to know these results.

The National Institutes of Health funds the BabySeq study at about $25 million. The initial round of results from the study, will help doctors determine how to use the testing in the future, and also measure the psychological and economic impact these results might have on the parents and newborns that receive this information.

After babies are born, researchers from the project go into delivery rooms to get parents on board, but so far they’ve had trouble getting them to participate. BabySeq says that 9 out of 10 parents they asked denied doing the test.

VICE News found one family that did, and followed them on the day of their test results for their newborn son, Bo.

The World Cup begins today, with Russia playing Saudi Arabia in Moscow for the opening match. 32 countries will be competing in the tournament, which concludes on July 15th.

The Russian Federation is hosting matches in 12 stadiums across the country. One of the last stadiums to be readied for the World Cup is the Yekaterinburg Arena, which was originally constructed in 1957, during the Soviet heyday.

A protected cultural monument, the stadium seated 23,000 people, falling about 12,000 seats short of FIFA’s requirements. So in 2014, chief architect Oleg Gak was tasked with rebuilding the arena to meet the World Cup requirements. There was one caveat, he had to do so, while preserving the arena’s unique Soviet architecture.

“FIFA wanted specific kinds of stands that could hold 35,000 people” said Gak.” So the new stadium was built around the old protected walls.”

Gak’s team decided to open the stadium's perimeter and build temporary grandstands. The expanded seating puts approximately 12,000 fans outside the stadium walls -- but their view of the field should be uncompromised.

“We as designers made plans for the future, assuming the grandstands would go away, and the facade would be closed off” says Gak.

The Yekaterinburg arena will host its first match, Egypt versus Uruguay, on June 15 at 17:00 local time.
